My IKEA Sofa Gets New Life with Bemz Covers

I firmly believe that IKEA's sofa selection is actually great. The affordable retailer sometimes gets a bad rap because it's...affordable. And while some of their items are far from investment pieces, IKEA does sell some great stuff.
Take my sofa for example. We have a really small living room that is basically part of our entryway. We also love to lounge. Three sections of IKEA's Soderhamn turned out to be the ideal setup. It's low profile helps keep our open-concept space from feeling too crowded, and I get to sit criss-cross-applesauce (lol). The covers we bought it with were fine, but they weren't anything special.
Bemz was kind enough to gift me a couple of sets of sofa covers and I want to share a little more about my experience. They are a Swedish company that creates made-to-order covers for IKEA sofas – even some discontinued models!
I had heard of Bemz as an affordable way to upgrade an IKEA sofa. While I wouldn't call them affordable (these covers probably would have cost about the same as my sofa, which was about $800), they are a great way to extend the longevity of your pieces. It's also way more simple to change the vibe of your apartment with a new cover instead of lugging heavy furniture up and down flights of stairs.
I started by ordering free fabric swatches from their website. Once I'd made my selections, it took about five weeks for Bemz to make my covers and a few days to ship from Europe. The hardest part was putting them on – my particular sofa model has to be almost completely disassembled in order to change the covers. Annoying, but that's an IKEA issue. And oh my goodness I am IN LOVE!
I chose the loose fit style (Bemz also offers a minimalist and fitted style). The linen fabrics I chose are Brera Lino in natural and Simply Linen in Rosemary. It was fun to mix the two together for this reel! Our sofa is sporting the natural color for now, but I'm thinking Rosemary in spring?? It feels so luxe. I think I need to upgrade to some sexier side tables now.
Alright, now to answer a few questions you all asked on Instagram:
Did you have to provide measurements for all of the individual cushions?
I didn't have to measure a thing! Because Bemz specializes in IKEA covers, all I had to do was tell them which sofa I have and which components. The ordering process is simple – you choose your fabric, then you choose your IKEA model.
Does Bemz make covers for non-IKEA sofas?
Nope! All of Bemz's covers are specifically designed to fit IKEA sofa models.
Are they machine washable? Treated with any stain resistent treatment?
They sure are washable, but care instructions vary based on the fabric you choose. I do not believe the fabric is treated with anything, which is good because some sofas out there are treated with toxic chemicals in the name of resisting stains.
And that's all she wrote! Bemz was kind enough to offer my followers a discount for a limited time – code DOMMDOTCOM gets you 20% off. 😉
